There is y there are se utilizan para hablar de la cantidad de algo. En inglés, el verbo to be (ser o estar) se conjuga de la siguiente manera:
There is se usa para hablar de una sola cosa: There is a book on the table. There are se usa para hablar de más de una cosa: There are two books on the table.
En el ejemplo anterior, el verbo to be se conjuga en función del sustantivo (book o books). Esto se debe a que, al utilizar there is o there are, se está haciendo referencia a la cantidad de algo. Otro ejemplo:
There is one book on the table. There are two books on the table.
En los ejemplos anteriores, one y two (una y dos) son números ordinales. Otros ejemplos de números ordinales son: first (primero), second (segundo), third (tercero), fourth (cuarto), fifth (quinto), etc.
There is y there are se puede utilizar también en frases afirmativas, en las que se hace referencia a la existencia de algo. En este caso, el verbo to be se conjuga en función del sujeto de la frase:
Afirmativo I am a student. You are my friend. He is from Mexico. She is a doctor. It is a cat. We are happy. They are in the park.
Por último, cabe mencionar que there is y there are se pueden utilizar también en frases interrogativas y negativas. En este caso, el verbo to be va al final de la frase:
Interrogativo Is there a cat in the house? Are there any books on the table?
Negativo There isn’t a cat in the house. There aren’t any books on the table.
