El verbo to be y el verbo have got se usan para hablar de la existencia de algo o de alguien. En inglés, los dos verbos se traducen al español como ser o estar.
El verbo to be se usa:

Para hablar de la nacionalidad de alguien: I am Spanish (Soy español).
Para hablar del lugar donde estamos o donde se encuentra algo: The pen is on the table (El bolígrafo está sobre la mesa).
Para realizar preguntas sobre la identidad de alguien o de algo: Who are you? (¿Quién eres?).
Para realizar preguntas sobre el lugar donde se encuentra alguien o algo: Where is the book? (¿Dónde está el libro?).
El verbo have got se usa:
Para hablar de la existencia de algo o de alguien: I’ve got a car (Tengo un coche).
Para realizar preguntas sobre la existencia de algo o de alguien: Have you got a pen? (¿Tienes un bolígrafo?).
En general, el verbo to be se usa más que el verbo have got, pero ambos se pueden usar en algunos casos.
