El conditional, también conocido como el modo condicional, es un tiempo verbal que se utiliza para hablar de eventos que podrían suceder en el futuro, pero que dependen de otro evento que tiene que ocurrir primero.
Por ejemplo, si vas a una tienda con la intención de comprar una camiseta, pero no tienes suficiente dinero, entonces podrías decir:
«Iré a comprar la camiseta cuando tenga dinero.»
En este ejemplo, la compra de la camiseta es el evento que depende de otro evento, que es conseguir el dinero. Si no hay dinero, entonces la compra de la camiseta no tiene lugar.
Otro ejemplo podría ser el siguiente:
«Llamaré a mi amigo cuando tenga tiempo.»
En este ejemplo, el evento que depende de otro es la llamada a tu amigo. Si no tienes tiempo, entonces no podrás hacer la llamada.
El conditional se forma con el verbo auxiliar «would» y el verbo principal en su forma básica (infinitivo sin «to»).
Por ejemplo, la frase «I go to the store» se convierte en «I would go to the store» cuando se utiliza en el conditional.
Aquí hay algunos ejemplos de oraciones en el tiempo condicional:
Si tuviera tiempo, iría a la fiesta.
Si tuvieras dinero, comprarías un coche nuevo.
Si ella supiera la verdad, se enojaría.
Si supieras la respuesta, me la dirías.
Como se puede ver en los ejemplos anteriores, el conditional se puede utilizar para hablar de eventos que podrían suceder en el futuro, pero también se puede utilizar para hablar de eventos que podrían haber sucedido en el pasado.
Por ejemplo, si te hubieras presentado a la entrevista, habrías conseguido el trabajo.
Otro ejemplo podría ser el siguiente:
Si hubiera llovido, habríamos cancelado la excursión.
En general, el conditional se utiliza para hablar de eventos que no han ocurrido, ya sea porque son eventos que podrían suceder en el futuro o porque son eventos que podrían haber sucedido en el pasado.
