On Monday mornings John and Mary usually meet at John’s house and walk to school together. But this Monday John is late. He arrives at Mary’s house at 8.05. “I’m sorry I’m late,” he says. “I overslept.” “It doesn’t matter,” says Mary. “Let’s go.” It is 8.10. They start to walk to school.

“What time is it?” asks John. “It’s eight o’clock,” says Mary. They are near the school now. “We’re late,” says John. “We’re not late,” says Mary. “It’s only eight o’clock. The first lesson doesn’t start until eight thirty.” They are at the school gate now. “Where’s your bag?” asks John.
