El past simple se forma con el verbo en su forma infinitiva sin to. Se utiliza para hablar de acciones pasadas que sucedieron en un momento determinado y que ya han terminado. No se utiliza para hablar de acciones que suceden en el presente. El past simple se utiliza con adverbios de tiempo como yesterday, ago, last week, when, etc. A veces se utiliza el presente simple en lugar del past simple para hablar de acciones habituales, especialmente en narraciones.
Para formar el past simple de los verbos regulares, se añade -ed al infinitivo del verbo. Por ejemplo, el verbo work (trabajar) se convierte en worked (trabajó/trabajaba), el verbo play (jugar) se convierte en played (jugó/jugaba).
Para formar el past simple de los verbos irregulares, hay que aprender de memoria la forma correcta. Por ejemplo, el verbo see (ver) se convierte en saw (vió/veía), el verbo take (tomar) se convierte en took (tomó/tomaba).
Algunos verbos regulares tienen un cambio de pronunciación en la forma del past simple. Estos verbos se llaman verbos regulares con doble consonante. Por ejemplo, el verbo stop (detenerse) se convierte en stopped (detuvo/detenía) y el verbo travel (viajar) se convierte en travelled (viajó/viajaba).
Los adverbios de tiempo se colocandetrás del verbo en afirmativo, pero delante del verbo en negativo y en interrogativo. Por ejemplo:
Afirmativo: She played tennis yesterday.
Negativo: She didn’t play tennis yesterday.
Interrogativo:Did she play tennis yesterday?
El past simple se utiliza con verbos como buy, come, drink, go, have, make, etc para hablar de acciones puntuales. Por ejemplo:
I bought a new car yesterday.
They went to the park last week.
We had a party last weekend.
El past simple también se utiliza con verbos como be, work, live, study, teach, etc para hablar de acciones que sucedieron durante un periodo de tiempo. Por ejemplo:
I lived in Spain for five years.
They studied English for two hours.
We worked in the garden all day.
El past simple también se utiliza para hablar de acciones que sucedieron en el pasado pero que todavía están sucediendo en el presente. Por ejemplo:
I knew her from school.
They arrived at the hotel an hour ago.
We saw him in townyesterday.

En primer lugar, vamos a repasar el uso de este tiempo verbal. El Past Simple se usa para hablar de hechos o acciones que sucedieron en un momento concreto del pasado y que ya han terminado. Por ejemplo:
Yesterday I played tennis with my friends.
Ayer jugué al tenis con mis amigos.
They arrived at 8 o’clock.
Llegaron a las 8.
También se usa el Past Simple para hablar de acciones habituales que realizábamos en el pasado. Por ejemplo:
When I was a child, I rode my bike every day.
Cuando era pequeño, iba en bici todos los días.
Para formar el Past Simple de los verbos regulares, basta con añadir la terminación -ed al infinitivo del verbo. Por ejemplo:
work – worked

live – lived

Para los verbos irregulares, la forma del Past Simple es diferente. Por ejemplo:
buy – bought
comprar
write – wrote
