Listening is one of the skills that are tested in the First Certificate in English (FCE) exam. In this exam, there are four papers: Reading and Use of English, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Part 4 is a talk by one person. You will hear the talk twice. In Part 4, you will be tested on your ability to follow and understand a longer monologue. Listening is a very important skill, not only for the FCE exam, but also for everyday life. If you can’t understand what someone is saying, you will miss important information. The four tips below will help you to improve your listening skills.
1. Make sure you can hear the speaker clearly. This may seem obvious, but if you can’t hear the speaker, you won’t be able to understand what they are saying. If you are in a noisy environment, try to move to a quieter place. If you are using headphones, make sure they are not on too low a volume.
2. Try to relax and concentrate on what the speaker is saying. If you are tense, you will find it more difficult to understand. And if you are not concentrating, you will miss important information. So try to relax and focus on the speaker.
3. Try to predict what the speaker is going to say. This will help you to follow the conversation and to understand what is being said. For example, if someone asks you where you are going on holiday, they are probably going to ask you where you are going to stay and what you are going to do when you are there. So if you are listening to a conversation and you can’t understand what is being said, try to predict what the speaker is going to say next.
4. Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification. If you don’t understand something, don’t be afraid to ask the speaker to repeat it or to explain it in a different way. It is better to ask for clarification than to miss important information.
