Comparative and superlative adjectives in English

When we want to compare two people, things or groups of things, we use comparative adjectives. We usually add -er to short adjectives and -er to long adjectives. For example:

  • short adjectives: tall, fast
  • long adjectives: intelligent, interesting

When we want to compare more than two people, things or groups of things, we use superlative adjectives. We usually add -est to short adjectives and -est to long adjectives. For example:

  • short adjectives: tallest, fastest
  • long adjectives: intelligent, interesting

There are some irregular comparative and superlative adjectives. For example:

  • good – better – best
  • bad – worse – worst
  • far – farther/further – farthest/furthest

Remember, we use more with long adjectives:

  • more intelligent, more interesting

We use the most with long adjectives:

  • the most intelligent, the most interesting
