Comparative and Superlative Forms of Adjectives and Adverbs in English
When we want to compare two things or more than two things, we use comparative forms of adjectives and adverbs. There are three forms of comparison:
positive: describes one thing
comparative: describes two things and shows how they are different
superlative: describes three or more things and shows which one has the quality to the greatest or least degree
The positive form is just the regular form of the adjective or adverb. For example:
He’s a fast driver.
She works hard.
The comparative form is used to compare two things. It is made by adding -er to most short adjectives and adverbs or by using more + the adjective or adverb. For example:
He’s a faster driver than me.
She works harder than her sister.
This car is more expensive than that one.
I run faster than you.
The superlative form is used to describe three or more things. It is made by adding -est to most short adjectives and adverbs or by using most + the adjective or adverb. For example:
He’s the fastest driver in the world.
She’s the hardest worker in her office.
This is the most expensive car in the showroom.
I’m the fastest runner in my class.
Note that with some adjectives and adverbs, we use different words altogether to form the comparative and superlative forms. For example:
good – better – best
bad – worse – worst
little – less – least
much / many – more – most
far – farther / further – farthest / furthest

easy – easier – easiest
loud – louder – loudest
quiet – quieter – quietest
happy – happier – happiest
sad – sadder – saddest
early – earlier – earliest
late – later – latest
